Sunday Salon: Feeling Slumpy

Hello Turkey-stuffed (maybe, still) readers!

I hope you are all having a lovely Sunday before heading back to work.  I had a nice, long weekend.  It felt a little too long actually!  With only two weeks left in the semester, I'm kind of anxious to get back to work to get everything finished before the big holiday break.  Thanksgiving always seems to come at an odd time, and in my experience, it can make me and my students lose focus a little.  That said, it is one of my favorite holidays and I love to relax and eat delicious food and hang out with my family.

In reading related news, I'm having a slump.  I've tried all of my normal tactics to get out of it, but they aren't really working.  I read something fun:

...which I enjoyed but didn't send me flying out of my slumpitude (if I'm being honest, I usually use Jodi Picoult for that).

I've tried to push myself through my more serious read, which I'm really enjoying, but it is so serious.

I've totally neglected reading this for a read-a-long:

I've started these, but they aren't working either:

So, what do you all suggest?  What do you do when you experience a slump?  Any recommendations for books that helped you get out of them?

  1. I hate that feeling of being in a slump. I'm not reading much right now either, partly because I'd committed to reading 266 picture books before Christmas, but partly because I've not really run across anything I've been crazy about reading. I've been waiting a long time for the new Tony Horwitz and it's finally arrived and it's deadly serious. Big disappointment. Language of Flowers is not as amazing as I had been led to believe. I wasn't wild about The Tiger's Wife either. If they'd publish some great stories, we'd be out of this slump in a snap!

  2. Sometimes reading just doesn't quite do it for me, either. Which is when other distractions set in.

Thanks for sharing...and for visiting my blog.

  3. The Help is totally not the thing to get one out of a reading slump. We're finishing it for Tuesday, so I'm gonna assume you won't be able to breeze through it by then. ;)

Unslumping...hmmmmmmmm...I usually just watch some Netflix Instant and then mill around the library/people's blogs/my shelves until something catches my interest. But there's no actual forcing it. If the interest has temporarily fled, you're probably supposed to be doing something different than reading. Which can be a mega-fun sort of thing.

  4. It really seems like the slumpiness is going around big-time right now. I usually re-read old favorites - guilty pleasure reads when I'm in a slump. Something I know I'm going to love with all my heart. Usually this would be Harry Potter books, Outlander books by Diana Gabaldon, or some of my favorites by Anne McCaffrey. I wish you luck with your reading!

  5. AW.. I'm in a slump a lot so I'm afraid I can't be of much help... Although: as a slow reader I did finish all three volumes of Murakami's 1Q84 in only two weeks!!!

  6. Maybe you just need a reading break for a few days? That happens to me every now and again, and it's usually my brain's way of telling me to not read for a few days.

    Maybe reread a favourite?

  7. I've gone through those slumps, and it's not fun. Sometimes I start feeling stultified by the real and imagined rules/constraints on my reading. Then I like to just go to the library or a bookstore, and try to find something that I've never heard of (harder now than it used to be), something that just speaks to me. Then again, sometimes it's good to just take a break! Hope your slump ends soon...

  8. Usually when I get a book slump, it usually means I need to take a bit of a break.
