Back to the Classics Challenge

So, I'm caving and signing up for the Back to the Classics challenge.  If you too would like to jump on the bandwagon, visit Sarah Reads Too Much HERE.  I am definitely signed up for this challenge this year, and I'm not going to finish it.  In fact, I often don't finish challenges.  However, this year I am formulating some self-imposed challenges, with which I'm going to try to make this one overlap.  Many of the books I read in 2011 were published in 2011 and I'm going to try to stray from that a bit next year.

So, here are the categories for 2012, and my tentative selections to fill them:

  • Any 19th Century Classic - Lewis Carroll, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass
  • Any 20th Century Classic - Flannery O'Connor, Wise Blood
  • Reread a classic of your choice - Charlotte Bronte, Jane Eyre
  • A Classic Play -Either Ibsen, Hedda Gabbler, or Shakespeare, A Winter's Tale
  • Classic Mystery/Horror/Crime Fiction - Richard Mateson, I Am Legend
  • Classic Romance- Either Emily Bronte, Wuthering Heights, or maybe a Jane Austen
  • Read a Classic that has been translated from its original language to your language - Jose Saramago, Blindness
  • Classic Award Winner  - Colum McCann, Let the Great World Spin
  • Read a Classic set in a Country that you (realistically speaking) will not visit during your lifetime - Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Herland
All of these books are currently sitting on my shelves, TBR and ready to go.

  1. Thanks for joining in again! Reading everyone's lists is actually making it harder for me to write mine - I keep finding more books I want to read! (I am Legend from your list)

Also, you touched on exactly why I continued the challenge this year. I feel like I am getting too caught up in the latest releases or ARCs and need to remind myself to keep reading the classics as well.

    Have fun!

  2. I also chose books on my TBR shelf, just to get myself motivated to tackle it :) Best of luck!

  3. Glad you're joining in! I feel like too much of what I'm reading is contemporary non-classic stuff so hopefully this will help me expand my reading horizons a bit more. Good luck!

  4. And I'll try this one too: That'll make at least 20 purposeful choices for next year, and I'm hoping for some TBR/classics overlap...
Off to find Heaney's "Digging", since it's your favorite.
