TLC Tour: Elizabeth L. Silver, The Execution of Noa P. Singleton

Welcome to the TLC Book Tour for The Execution of Noa P. Singleton!

I requested this book from TLC because I had read something comparing it to Gone Girl.  If you are a follower of my blog, you may have noticed that I have been in quite the reading slump for all of 2013.  I thought that something Gillian Flynn-esque might be able to pull me out of this:

I'm not going to say definitively that my slump is over, but it is improving, and I will credit Elizabeth Silver's book, at least in part.

Noa P. Singleton, the protagonist in the book, is on death row, accused of killing another woman, and she is on her last appeal.  She is just a few months away from her execution when her victim's mother shows up at her cell with a young lawyer, asking to help Noa apply for clemency. The rest of the book is basically a careful unraveling of the story backing up through all of the incidents that lead to Noa's crime.  It is totally filled with spoilers so:

Of course, the whole novel is told from Noa's point of view, so WHO KNOWS WHAT IS TRUE AND WHAT ISN'T, but that is the fun of the thing.  Noa isn't a super likeable character, although I would say that she is quite charming in comparison to a Flynn leading lady.  She grew on me as I read.  And then there is the ending, which is always the sticking point in a book like this, and I wan't totally satisfied with this one, although that seems to be something that is common for me when reading books in this genre.  So, I would definitely recommend this as a summer/beach/airplane/anti-slump book.  It is a great debut, and I look forward to more from Silver.

  1. I dig a book with an unreliable narrator. You never know what in the heck is going on, lol. Which can be a good thing :)
